I work in a variety of different styles to suit different projects, and I always start with pencil sketches which are scanned, then if more colour is needed, I add it digitally - like a virtual painting.
On the right is part of the design work that I created for a storyboard, to demonstrate what would happen during a proposed theme park ride.
It's all hand-drawn in blue and red pencil, as at this stage of the project, full-colour artwork wasn't required.
Such storyboards are a really good way to communicate and to understand what's happening during a ride, or show etc. These were done to establish the "feel" of the attraction, and aid discussion of the project in it's early stages.
The designs on the right were for a Wild West style hotdog stand for a theme-park. You can see the initial sketch on the left, and the final coloured version on the right
Painting digitally provides me with greater flexibility for changing the colours, backgrounds, or even the entire design if I need to.
At the bottom right are much more finished digital artworks for the development of a stage show.
They help to communicate to everyone involved how I imagine the finished props and sets will appear, and help establish the feel and tone of the entire project
Once completed, I can supply the artwork to the client on a disc, and they then own the copyright of the design. Simple.
